Devizes provides Umpire for England Game

Caroline ‘Awesome’ Oram, Devizes’ senior umpire, took charge of the ENGLAND V TEAM BATH match at Bath University on Tuesday 15 December. This was a tremendous honour both for Caroline and the Club. And to top that, Caroline has also just passed her ‘A’ award theory test - awesome indeed!

Devizes ball girls get the thumbs up from England

Devizes again provided ball girls for Team Bath - but this time against an all star England team. Nine Devizes juniors were at Bath University's training village on Tuesday 16th March to be ball girls for the friendly against the England squad. After a tight first quarter, England won the match by 12 goals, but Devizes were also winners, as the girls' attitude and attentiveness were complimented by the players after the game.

Well done to Maddie Brunker, Katie Edwards, Hannah Wilson, Jo Wicks, Charlie Linney, Lil Wood, Nicole Pfeil, Laura Holland and Megan Taylor.

A Team on verge of title

The A team won a tough match against Combe Down in poor conditions tonight, meaning that with one match to go they are ahead of Chippenham A by four points - the Moonraker title is within their grasp. Losing by 2 at half time, Devizes dug deep and played steady netball, and the final score line of 36-27 was well-earned. But the return match against Combe Down next week promises to be another tough game.

Third Time Champions!

In rainswept conditions, Devizes made it three in a row, beating a determined Combe Down 32-25 to take the Moonraker crown. From the moment the two teams stepped on court, the rain began, making conditions very difficult for both teams. Devizes took an early lead, but Combe Down fought every step of the way, taking advantage of some dropped balls and making a number of key interceptions. But Devizes fought back, minimising Combe Down's shooting opportunities, and ended the season with the win they needed.

Baby Congratulations!

Congratulations to Claire and Scott Sartin, as well as Harrison and Dylan, on the birth of baby Elliot Jude! Elliot was born in Swindon on Thursday 1st April at 12.57pm, weighing 8lbs 3oz - just early enough to stop mum coming to support the As in their final match of the season!

U11s shine at Pinehurst Hi Fives

Devizes' U11s put in some great performances at the Pinehurst Hi Five tournament on Saturday 1st May.

In their group, Devizes Blue won 3, drew 1 and lost 2 to end up placed third in their group, behind both the eventual finalists, Lawn and Chippenham. Devizes Pink, playing in the other group, won 5 and lost only 1, meaning that they went into the semi-finals as runners up in their group. In the semi final against Lawn, the Pinks were 0-5 down at half time, but rallied magnificently in the second half, eventually losing by just two goals, 4-6.

The tournament was won by Chippenham who beat Lawn in the final.

Brean 2010

Congratulations to the Brean team 2010, who returned from the netball weekend at Pontins, Brean Sands after achieving 5th place out of a starting line up of 108 teams.

The A team, plus coach Nikki and Becki Gaiger, travelled down to Pontins on Friday evening to take up residence in the high class chalets at this well-known resort for the stars. Pleasantly surprised at the fact there were enough chairs for everyone AND hot water (well, after we'd found the right switch), we wandered out to enjoy the delights of Pontins on Friday night; the dance floor was still sticky and Becky still lost all her money on the slot machines - not a lot changes from year to year!

Saturday's cold and rainy matches were delayed by - wait for it - oil on the courts (?!) plus a nasty injury to another team, so we didn't finish playing until nearly 7pm. But it was a good day's play. Becky even met an old friend on court (not joking - they last played against each other in the 1980s!). By the end of the day, we had placed second in our group, losing only to Whyteleafe A, meaning we were in the cup competition on Sunday. Taking the decision that smelly was marginally more acceptable than unfed, we went straight across to the restaurant for a very welcome meal and then collapsed back in the chalets for a night in front of the telly.

Up bright and early on Sunday, we won our group, and went forward to the knockout stages. Our first challenge was to meet Whyteleafe A again, but we reversed Saturday's result and beat them, earning ourselves a place in the quarter-finals. There we faced the very tall Pips Ladies A; playing our socks off, we held them to a 7-7 draw at full time, only to lose in extra time, to be placed in fifth position overall.

Despite the weather it was another awesome Brean weekend - special thanks to our Team Coin Tosser, Lou, who was too young to play (ahhhhh!) but did a magnificent job keeping track of our matches, winning all but one of the tosses all weekend, and generally knowing where we were going to be and getting us there on time; and to Becki, whose frustration knew no bounds as she was confined to the sidelines but who will definitely be there next year!

Free Time accepted

Devizes Netball Club will accept payment for affiliations, training fees and match fees through the Free Time scheme.

The Free Time scheme has become available to pupils in schools in the Devizes area since May. Families on certain benefits are eligible to apply to the fund, which exists to provide funding for children and young people to take part in out of school activities. To find out if your family is eligible, you need to talk to your child's school.

If you would like to use Free Time money to pay for your daughter's fees at the club, please contact Becky Sedgwick.

U14 Satellite Success

Nine girls from Devizes were successful in this weekend's trials for next year's Devizes Satellite Academy, the first rung on the England Netball Excel pathway for young players.

The academy, which will take place from September to March next academic year, is aimed at girls in the under 14 age bracket, but also takes talented younger players. So particular congratulations must go to Chloe Ellis, Hannah Wilson, Katie Cox, Katie Edwards and Sarah Hogan, all of whom will be taking their places at the academy as U12s next year. In addition, Laura Holland, Issy and Jemima Pitceathley and Nicole Pfeil were also selected for their second year at the academy.

Devizes Pinks win Junior Tournament

A wonderful weekend's netball at the club's junior and senior tournaments was capped by Devizes Pink winning the under 11 High Five section against some talented opposition.

The tournaments were held over the weekend of 12th and 13th June, following the successful anniversary tournaments held last year. The results for the junior tournament were as follows:

Summer League Champions!

In a tough final, Devizes 1 beat BMT to win the Moonraker Summer League by 18 goals to 12. In the first stages of the competition, BMT beat Devizes 1, but that result was reversed with a solid performance from Devizes. Concentration and determination from all members of the squad gave Devizes a first quarter lead, which they didn't lose despite some excellent play from BMT. The third - fourth place playoff between Chippenham 2 and Devizes 2 was a close fought match, with Chippenham coming away 21-19 winners.

All players and umpires must return their membership forms and appropriate fees to Trudie Procter NEXT Monday, 20th September in order to be affiliated in time for the new league. There are two membership forms, which you can download here:adult membership and Under 18 membership.

Juniors shine at Pinehurst

Two Devizes teams took part in Pinehurst Netball Club's High Five Charity Shield tournament on 24th October. Both teams played exceptionally well to win four of their five matches in their respective groups and reached the semi finals. This consisted of two Trinity/Devizes matches with Devizes A playing Trinity B and Devizes B playing Trinity A. (Trinity is a very good club in Oxfordshire). Devizes B lost their match and Devizes A won after playing extra time for a golden goal!! Unfortunately Devizes A were then beaten by a very well drilled Trinity A in the Final. However, it was a very successful day for the club and well played to all the players and to all the parents who supported them.

Moonraker Junior League dates

The first fixtures in the Moonraker Junior League will be played at Devizes Leisure Centre on Sunday 7th November between 10am and noon - if your daughter has been selected she will have received a note with more details. The second round of the league will take place at Warminster on Sunday 5th December in the morning - venue and times to be confirmed.

Devizes showed that they are a force to be reckoned with at the first round of the Moonraker Junior League last Sunday. Supported by plenty of parents, all age groups played well. Our two U11 High Five teams dominated their opposition, both winning easily, as did our U12 squad. Meanwhile, in the U14 section, Devizes put out a team of U13s, who drew with an older Wessex Blades squad.

Brean 2011

We are planning to go to Brean again this May - see the message below from Nikki:

BREAN Weekend 2011 – Friday 13th (pm) to Sunday 15th May

Approx cost is £35-40 per person for entry and accommodation; additional costs would be dinner and refreshments for each day. From last year’s experience I would suggest everyone puts in £5 and I (Nikki) will do a shop and fill the fridges with fruit, bread, sandwich fillings, bacon, drinks and snacks for all to help themselves to over the weekend.

Meals on the Friday and Saturday night would probably be at nearby (2 mins walk) pub, nice food reasonable prices, although depending on numbers if it is reasonably practical we may do a pasta evening on the Friday in the chalets.

Travel would be organised nearer the time but would be via car shares with drivers getting petrol money. We would need under 18’s to help provide parental assistance with transport.

Depending on interest will depend on the number of teams entered. This is a senior tour and the standard is varied from regional level teams to back to netballers so there is something for everyone. This tour is open to all adults and Under 18's in the A to C teams only. Under 18s will be issued with guidelines for themselves and a parental permission form nearer the time.

We need to get our entry in by the end of the month so if you would like to go please let me know asap.

Juniors Dates

The annual Blue Jays Junior Tournament will be held on Sunday 27th March at Sarum Academy (formerly Salisbury High School), Westwood Road, Bemerton Heath, Salisbury SP2 9HS.

Matches will begin at 10am and end about 3.30pm. The club hopes to enter teams at U11, U12, U14 and U16 depending on availability. Girls have been given slips if they have been selected. Please make sure you return them as soon as possible to Sue or Trudie.

Parents are being asked to transport girls themselves where possible; some lifts will be available. Again, please see Sue or Trudie.

The next round of the Moonraker Junior League will be held on Sunday 13th February at Sarum Academy (address and travel details as above.) Girls will have been given slips if they have been selected.

Devizes Tournament Weekend - keep the dates free!

Please keep the weekend of 11th and 12th June free for the club's annual tournaments.

Our junior tournament will be held on Saturday 11th June and the senior tournament on Sunday 12th June. We need helpers on both days, but particularly on the Saturday so we can provide each of our junior teams with a team manager and umpire. We also need people to help with refreshments and general tasks. Please do see if you can help out - it's a great weekend!

Devizes are Moonraker Champions again!

With one match left to play, Devizes A beat Chippenham A 61-41 on Tuesday to secure the championship for the fourth year in a row. Chippenham are Devizes' nearest rivals this season, and the 20 goal lead reflects the progress the team - and the whole club - have made this season. Congratulations!

Moonraker Junior Results

Congratulations to our juniors for another good set of results from the latest round of the Moonraker Junior League.

Devizes results:

High Five:

Devizes Pink v Team Bath - lost 3-12
Devizes Pink v Chippenham - won 8-2
Devizes Blue v Team Bath - lost 1-5
Devizes Blue v Blue Jays - won 8-4
Devizes Turquoise v Chippenham - lost 2-6
Devizes Turquoise v Blue Jays - lost 2-12

The Under 12s lost 1-8 to a strong Westbury team. The under 13s had four short games - they lost 2-3 to Blue Jays, then beat them 4-1; they beat Chippenham 2-0 and then drew with Chippenham 2-2.

Summer League

If you would like to play in our versatility summer league, please let Trudie know as soon as possible! Matches are played throughout June and July, and are great fun. Teams are of mixed ability, and it's a great chance to try out new positions and play with different players. Highly recommended!

Premier Division complete

All matches in the Moonraker Premier division have now ended. Devizes A have retained their title, and, demonstrating the strength and depth of the club, Devizes B have finished in 5th place in the league, comfortably above the relegation zone. Congratulations to both teams!

As Moonraker champions, Devizes will be entering a team in the Wiltshire County Regional Playoffs on Sunday 10th April. The match will be against the winners of the Swindon League, Abbey Meads, for a place in the Regional League 2 playoff tournament to be held on Sunday 22nd May.

The match will take place at Dorcan at 1.30pm - supporters would be very welcome!

But please note, all teams will play the first four rounds, on 19th and 26th May, and 9th, 16th and 23rd June. Playoffs for final rankings will be on 30th June and 7th July.

Wiltshire Play off for RL2

On Sunday 10th April 2011 Devizes took their first step towards regional level netball when we headed to Swindon to play the winners of the Swindon League, Abbeymeads, in the local play off to decide who represents Wiltshires at the forthcoming play offs to enter Regional League 2 for the 2011-12 season.

The squad who travelled without regulars Louise (ineligible) and Anna (work commitments) were joined by Kit and Jo who made her first appearance for Devizes this season after the birth of son Harry only 5 weeks before.

In the first quarter a very well drilled Abbeymeads came out very strongly and quickly pulled out a 5 goal lead while we adjusted to the speed and intensity of the game which we have not experienced. Towards the end of the first quarter we were finding more of the dynamic attacking netball we have instilled in ourselves and our defensive unit were getting to grips with the fast and sharp attack of Abbeymeads. Unfortunately we went into the 2nd quarter giving Abbey a 14-4 advantage, however with our shooters now finding the net and our defence picking up balls at the back the second quarter was far more evenly matched.

Changes were made at half time with Jo coming on at shooter and Claire Robinson at WD and Lucy moving to WA, and again we put Abbeymeads under more pressure and were starting to find good shooting opportunities. An injury to Lucy half way through the 3rd quarter meant an introduction at GS for Steph and a new position of WA for Jo (sorry Jo I’ll warn you next time!) The changes did not interrupt our flow and another close quarter followed, again with Abbey four goals to the good.

Going into the last quarter a very determined Devizes side took to the court strongly and quickly established a quarter score five goal lead with some good shots by Becki and Steph and Alice and Sedgy taking some good interceptions at the back. Abbey fought back hard and put on a display of some outstanding netball; however we had found our stride by then as we went on to win the final quarter. Final score was 42-25 to Abbeymeads.

Everyone played brilliantly on the day, but a special mention for Alice who had the game of her life at GD and Becki G who did a captain’s job and stepped up to the GA position for the first time all season!.

Devizes, we played some great netball and pushed Abbeymeads hard, but the more experienced team at this level succeeded on the day, but I am very proud of the hard work and commitment you have shown and it is paying off and puts us in a great position for next season, when I expect the experience we have had this season puts us in a strong position.

Thank you to everyone who came to support us on the day and also to Anna and Louise, we missed you both on the day but your hard work throughout the season helped get us there! To Kit for coming back to experience this with us and to Jo for making a quick return from maternity leave!!!

Next season we go all the way to regional play offs!!!!!

Devizes Pink won all of their league matches - 7-2, 4-1, 5-0,14-0, 14-0. Devizes Blue lost their first match 0-4,won the next 7-0,drew 2-2, and won the last two 4-0 and 5-0, and came third, losing out on the semis by 1 point.

In their semi final, Devizes Pink beat Croft A 6-1. In the final they played Pinehurst A. This was quite a nerve racking final as Devizes played catch up throughout. At the final whistle we thought we had lost by one goal, but we had forgotten that Pinehurst's first goal was disallowed for '4 seconds'.

So we went to 'golden goal', but no rotations were allowed. Dev Pink had first centre pass which was intercepted straight away, and Pinehurst had the ball in their shooting circle in just two passes. Much to our relief they missed. Some careful passing brought the ball into Devizes Pink's circle and a very focussed shot at goal gave us the winning goal.

Both teams played some lovely netball throughout the tournament, with crucial interceptions being a key part to their play.

A very big well done to all who took part, and thank you to Trudie and Sue for organising the teams and umpiring and managing them on the day - and thank you too to all the parents and supporters!

Satellite success

Six girls from Devizes were successful in this weekend's trials for next year's Devizes Satellite Academy, the first rung on the England Netball Excel pathway for young players.

The academy, which will take place from September to March next academic year, is aimed at girls in the under 14 age bracket, but also takes talented younger players. So particular congratulations must go to Olivia Jones-Tunnicliff and Jasmine Mitchell who will be taking their places at the academy as U12s next year. In addition, Met Smith, Sarah Hogan, Louise Buller and Izzy Jaggs were also selected.

Junior tournament success!

Congratulations to Devizes Pink, who won the club's high five tournament on Saturday 10th June. The Pinks finished top out of a big group of nine teams, beating Lawn A by one point to take the title. Devizes Blue finished in a brilliant third place. This win caps a very successful year for our under 11s.

Devizes under 12s finished in second place to Lawn, and the under 14s were a creditable 5th out of 7 in a very strong group.

Thanks to all the parents, umpires and team managers for their help and support, but especially to Sue Bittner and Trudie Procter, the junior club coaches.

Kit orders

All orders for kit for next season must be received by Monday 4th July with payment in full (cheques payable to Devizes Netball Club). It takes up to 12 weeks for kit to be received from the manufacturers, and there won't be another order placed before the beginning of next season.

If you are intending to play for Devizes next season, you must have at least a match skort and top - but there are lots of other options too!

If you want to order new kit, you can download an order form here. Please return it to Becki Gaiger.

If you are ordering new match kit and have old kit in good condition, the club will buy it from you for £5 for a match top and £5 for a match skort.

Changes to training for next season

At the recent AGM some changes to training were agreed.

From September, the As to Cs will train on Wednesdays from 8-10pm at the indoor court at the Leisure Centre. The Ds to Jax will train on Mondays on the Leisure Centre's outdoor courts from 7-9pm. Once a month, the Ds will train with the As to Cs inside on Wednesday - the dates for those sessions will be given out at the beginning of the season.

The new training arrangements will begin in the week beginning 19th September. A full calendar of training dates will be available in September.

Everyone needs to be affiliated by the end of September - or by the end of August if you want to play in the first few matches of the Swindon league. Membership forms are available here - please note there are two forms - one for adults and one for under 18s playing in the senior club. Young players who belong to the junior club also need to complete and return a membership form, but this can wait until training begins again.

To get in early, please download a form and return it to Trudie at the address on the bottom of the form with a cheque for the appropriate amount (also on the form).

England Netball are inviting everyone aged between 12 and 25 volunteering in netball - as an umpire, coach, committee member, school helper or in any other way - to sign up for their Pass on Your Passion programme, which recognises and rewards young volunteers in netball.

Once you register online, you will receive a pack from England Netball. All you do then is record your hours, send in the slips to England Netball and await your rewards! For just 10 hours, you get an England water bottle - all the way up to 100 hours when the reward is a hoodie, and then 400 hours for an award presented at England Netball's Goalden Globes Awards evening!

Beginners' Umpiring Course

If anyone is interested in starting to umpire there is a beginners' umpiring course on Sunday 27th November between 10am and 4pm at the Dorcan Dome.

The beginners' course is the first step you have to take in order to progress to a formal umpiring qualification - and the prospect of £10 umpiring fee per game!

The course is suitable for everyone, whether you've done any umpiring or not, including young players.

The cost of the course is £30 which the club will pay. Please let Becky or Nikki know if you are interested.

CAPS Reaccreditation

We are pleased to announce that the club has just received its reaccreditation for the Bronze CAPS award.

The Club Action Planning Scheme (CAPS) is aligned to the Sport England Clubmark accreditation scheme. It is built around a set of core criteria which ensure that accredited clubs with junior sections operate to a set, consistent, accepted and adopted minimum operating standards. Clubs achieving this accreditation are recognised nationally as having a well run club which is ACTIVE and ACCESSIBLE. This means getting the best out of everyone and giving everyone a sporting chance.

CAPS has three levels of accreditation Bronze, Silver and Gold. Bronze CAPS is the first level, incorporating the Clubmark criteria covering the areas of Safeguarding and protecting children and young people, quality coaching and officiating, competition, talent development, sports equality and good management.

Well done to Steph Bridewell who passed her Beginner's Umpiring award with flying colours on Tuesday, to add to the Level 1 coaching award she gained in the summer. She umpired her first match as a qualified umpire straight after her test and is now available to umpire division three matches.

New Under 14 Academy

We would like to start an under 14 academy for players who would like to be considered for the team that will compete in the regional under 14 tournament in March.

For the first time Devizes Netball Club hope to enter a team in the Netball South West under 14 regional tournament in March 2012 to play against the best under 14 teams in the South West region. Further information about the tournament can be located on the Netball Southwest website under competitions.To be eligible to play in the tournament players must have been 12 years of age on the 1st September 2011.

In order to help prepare for and select a squad for this competition we will be running additional training sessions for all players within the age group who are interested in being considered for the squad.

The first of these sessions is being held on Sunday 11th December between 10am and 12pm indoors at Devizes Leisure Centre and will cost £2.50 per player.

The club has had a very successful first half of the season, with all teams in the top half of their division, and several threatening promotion!

In division 3, our 5th team are in 5th place, while the Jax are in 4th; the 4ths are 4th in division 2; the 3rds are in third place in division 1 with two games in hand over the first and second place teams. In the premier division, the 2nds have climbed to 5th after a great string of four wins in a row, while the 1sts top the table with 8 wins out of 8 games, and no points conceded.

Our success so far is due in no small part to hard work at training and to Nikki's excellent coaching. Have a great Christmas, and see you all at training in the New Year - the first training dates are Wednesday 4th January for the 2nds, 3rds and 4ths, and Monday 9th January for the 1sts, 5ths and Jax.

Our first foray into the Swindon league is proving a huge success.

Devizes had to start in the bottom division of the league, and each week has put out teams of mixed age and ability - and half way through the season, we are top of the league, having not lost any matches.

From January all players in year 8 and 9 who currently train between 6 and 7pm on Monday evenings will be asked to come and train between 7 and 8pm instead. The cost of training will remain at £1 a week, pay and play.

This means that these players will be training alongside the senior club. The change has been brought about partly because our 6-7pm session is so full, and partly to enable the junior players' development to be accelerated as they train alongside more accomplished and experienced players.

Information will be coming out soon about this year's Brean weekends - for those of you who don't know, we go each year to Pontins at Brean Sands for a busy weekend of netball. It's great fun and the basic cost is about £40. The adult weekend will be Friday 18th to Sunday 20th May - we'd love to take two squads this year, one serious and one not so serious!

We're also hoping to take an under 14 squad and an under 16 squad to Brean for the first time - the date will probably be the last weekend in June - so if you're in those age groups and would like to go, keep your eyes peeled for more info!

Girls win £2,000 grant

Devizes Area Board last night awarded the club £2,000 to set up and run a junior academy for the next two years.

The Board had invited young people linked to a club or group to put forward applications for funding for a project that would benefit them and the community.

Some of our under 16s put in a proposal for the academy, which will be a place for talented young players, coaches and umpires to develop their skills. It will also be a springboard for entry into regional age group competitions. The academy will take place once a month. At the moment it is open to all players in years 8 and 9 and invited players from year 7. As the academy develops, the age range it caters for will widen. Under 16s will be able to take part next year.

Emily Buller, Laura Holland and Megan Taylor presented the proposal to the Devizes Area Board in front of 100 people, and afterwards the board unanimously agreed that they should be awarded the full grant applied for of £2,000. Huge thanks to them, and to Ellie Papps, Jade Shergold and Louise Buller, who also worked on the proposal.

Superleague Ball Girls

Eight of our under 11s did a great job as ball girls for Team Bath's Superleague match against Surrey Storm.

Ella, Molly, Megan, Hannah, Marley, Polly, Jemima and Paris took responsibility for the Bath players' drinks, collecting them from the changing rooms before the game and delivering them to the bench.

During the game they sat at strategic points around the court and retrieved balls that had gone off court. As a thank you, the girls were allowed to be first out after the warm down to meet the players and have photos taken.

Well done - you did Devizes proud!

Under 14 county playoffs

The new date for the Under 14 county playoffs has been confirmed as Sunday 11th March, at the Dorcan Dome in Swindon.

This is the first stage of qualification for the national Under 14 competition - three teams out of eight entered from Wiltshire will be selected to go through to the South West region's playoffs in Bath later in the year.

Matches start at 10.30am (players should be there at 9.45am) - please come along and support our team!

Easter Egg Hamper Raffle

To raise funds, the club will be holding an Easter Egg Hamper raffle over the next few weeks.

For the very modest sum of £1 a strip, you could be in with a chance of winning one of several hampers stuffed full of choccy goods!

Players will be given tickets to sell, and everyone is being asked to donate an egg - please see Becky for more information. Proceeds will be shared between the junior Brean tour and general club funds.

Beginners Umpiring Course

If you are interested in learning to be an umpire, there is a Beginners Umpiring Course soon - on Sunday 1st April between 10am and 4pm at Chippenham Sports Club.

The cost of the course is £10, but the club will pay the course fee for members who intend to continue learning and take their test in due course. After you attend the course, we will be happy to support and mentor you and provide opportunities for your continued development.

Moonraker Champions for 5th season in a row!

With a hard-won victory over Prior Park yesterday, Devizes 1 confirmed that, with two games in hand, they will be this season's Moonraker Champions - for the fifth season in a row.

The champions won 46-36 against strong opposition and had to stay focussed and controlled throughout the game to claim the win. Special mention must go to Steph Bridewell, who swapped ends, playing GD for the whole match due to injury and work commitments - a brilliant performance against formidable opponents!

Devizes 1 will now go on to represent the Moonraker League in the county playoffs on Sunday 29th April against Swindon's Abbeymeads, to see who is the Wiltshire representative at the Regional League qualifying tournament at Bath in May. This will be a repeat of last year's line up - but hopefully with a different result!

Supporters will be very welcome!

Moonraker Summer League - join in the fun!

Players are needed to make up teams for this season's Moonraker Versatility Summer League teams. Teams are made up of players from all teams mixed up together and the league is light hearted and great fun.

All players in Teams 1-5 and the Jax can take part - to ensure you have a place (places may be limited) email Trudie asap asking to be added to the list.

To play, you must be available for matches on Thursdays during late May, June and July (the exact dates will come out later). If you know you will not be able to make some dates, but would still like to play, please let Trudie know which dates you wouldn't be able to make so she can try and put you in a team; priority will be given however to players who are available for most or all of the match dates.

High Fives shine at Blue Jays Tournament

Devizes entered four teams into the annual Blue Jays tournament in Salisbury on 25th March: two U11 high five teams, very young U14 side (all of whom were U13 or U12) and an U16 team.

As ever, the tournament attracted some very strong clubs from a wide area. Our U16s and U14s played well, but lacked the experience of the very strongest club. But in the U11s, Devizes Blue won their group and went on into the semi-finals to play against Pinehurst. The match couldn't have been closer, with Devizes losing 4-5 as the GS prepared to shoot to level the game!

Well done to everyone who played and to Trudie, Sue and Nikki for managing the teams and umpiring.

As some of you will know as the winners of the Moonraker Premier Division, Team 1 has the opportunity to progress to Regional League 2 play offs. The first step though is to play and (hopefully) beat the winners of the county's other leagues, namely Abbeymeads of the Swindon league's top division.

Pushing for Promotion!

With just a few matches left, this season's Moonraker League is promising to be Devizes' most successful yet!

With the 1sts already secure as Champions, and the 2nds finishing an impressive 5th in the Premier division, two other teams are chasing promotion as the season comes to an end.

The 3rds are sitting in second place in division one, one place and one point ahead of rivals TNC. With a game in hand, the 3rds are very strongly placed to take the second promotion place from that division and join the 1sts and 2nds in the Premier division.

And in division 3, our young Jax team has impressed everyone with their play this season, and are also in second place. To maintain that place, they will need more strong results in the last two games of the season, as KSM White are just one place and three points behind with a game in hand.

Meanwhile, the 4ths are in an impressive third place in division 2 while the 5ths are midway in division 3.

Thanks to everyone for supporting the teams so far - watch this space for more results!

Wanted - Apprentice Coaches!

Devizes NC are looking for one or two people to join their successful apprentice coaching scheme - basically we will support you while you work towards your level one coaching award in return for your commitment to work within our coaching structure for two years.

This year, we would like to offer the opportunity in the first instance to adults as last year the places all went to juniors - if, however, no adults apply we will widen the opportunity to under 18s who can commit to the two year placement.

Fantastic end to the season!

With the 1sts already confirmed as Moonraker champions and the 2nds finishing far higher than any other club's second team, Devizes' season has already been a success - but there will be a nail-biting wait for results next week which will see if both the Jax and the 3rds can be promoted.

The Jax, having completed all their matches, lie in second place in division 3, two points ahead of rivals KSM White. KSM have one match left to play - against division winners Holt C and will need a clear win to give them second place over the Jax.

Meanwhile, in division 1, the 3rds are also lying in second place, tying on points with TNC but with a game in hand. The 3rds must be odds on to get promotion, but face two difficult matches next week - against a strongly finishing Holt B, and against TNC with whom they shared the points when the teams met earlier in the season. The pressure's certainly on for the 3rds, and they need to put in two top performances to take second place - which would mean Devizes would field a fantastic three teams in the premier division next year.

The 3rds would love loads of support - so if you can be there at 7.15pm on Tuesday for the match against TNC, or at 7.15pm on Thursday for the Holt B game, you'd be very welcome!

We were very pleased to be contacted by Team Bath last week to ask if Devizes would provide ball girl for their final showdown in the phase 2 of the Superleague as the home team meet Celtic Dragons to see which team progresses to the Superleague showdown - the finale to this season's national Superleague competition.

The request reflects well on the conduct of the ball girls Devizes has produced in the past - this time our under 16s will be taking centre stage. Watch out for them on Sky Sports sometime soon!

3rds are promoted!

A huge congratulations to our 3rd team, who by beating TNC in a tight game last night, secured promotion into the Moonraker Premier Division next season.

The squad has been hugely committed this season and their commitment has paid off with consistent netball and improvements all round.

Next season, Devizes will have a record three teams in the top division - a reflection on the general improvement within the club.

Best season ever!

With the final matches of the season played on Thursday, Devizes have finished their best ever season.

The 1sts are Moonraker Champions for the fifth season in a row; the 2nds finished in a great 5th place in the premier division; the 3rds came second in division 1, earning them a well-deserved promotion into the premier division next season, the 4ths and Jax both missed out on promotion from their divisions by just two points, and our 5th, who had a very disrupted season, rallied round to produce some great results to end up in 5th place.

These fantastic results are due to everyone's hard work, but in particular to the commitment of Nikki Lloyd, our head coach.

Thanks, Nikki, and here's to an even better season next year!

If you would like to trial for the 2012-13 season, forms are available here.

Trials for our three premier division teams will take place on Tuesday 3rd and Tuesday 10th July, between 7 and 9pm at the Leisure Centre courts. From those trials, seven players will be selected for each squad.

Trials for the remaining premier team places, and for teams 4 to 6 will take place on Monday 10th and Monday 17th September, again between 7pm and 9pm at the Leisure Centre courts.

If you aren't sure which trial dates you should be attending, please contact Nikki.

Satellite success in Swindon

The satellite academy is the first step on England Netball's excel programme. Girls will attend twelve specialist sessions next season as well as compete for the club.

Recognition for Trudie!

Congratulations to Trudie Procter, who has been nominated for one of the England Netball 'Goalden Globes' awards.

The Muriel McNally award is presented annually to a volunteer who has made an outstanding contribution to the development of netball at grassroots level for 10 years or more. Trudie has certainly done that in this area, through her work both at the club and in schools - particularly All Cannings Primary School, which has an unmatched record of success at the County High Five finals.

Trudie will be attending the South West Goalden Globe Awards 2012, which are being held at Brickleigh Castle in Tiverton on July 1st. Winners from there will be put forward for the National award, which will be announced at the National Goalden Globe Awards 2012, on 22nd September.

This is a fantastically well-deserved honour for Trudie, and we wish her all the very best for the awards night in July - and hopefully for the national awards later in the year!

We still need helpers for our tournament this weekend - particularly barbequers for Saturday, as well as general help on both days.

We would also love donations of cakes - we are running a cake stall on both Saturday and Sunday to raise funds for our junior tour to Brean as well as for general club funds. We're asking everyone who is playing to bring a small donation if possible!

Do come if you can, and help decide some important stuff for the club's future.

Junior Pontins 2012

Well done to our 19 under 14s and under 16s who went to the junior netball weekend at Brean this year.

It was our first tour to the junior tournament - and we had a great time! The standard of netball was extremely high, with the national champions in each age group there as well as many of the national finalists. But we survived, played well and improved as the weekend went on!

We'd love to go again next year ...

Young Umpires' exam!

Juniors who went on the umpiring course a couple of months ago need to complete and return their practice paper 1 by the end of next week, either to Nikki or me- you can either print one off and fill it in by hand or complete it on the computer and email it to us!

You also need to download and print off a copy of the young umpire's log and start to pick up a whistle in training. Ask one of our qualified umpires to watch you and to fill in the log afterwards.

Pay and Play over the summer

We're really pleased to announce, for all you netball geeks who just can't enough of netball, that we are going to continue with pay and play sessions over the summer holidays!

On Mondays from 7-8pm there will be coach-led skills and drills sessions (a great chance to focus on some new stuff for next season!), followed by an hour of light hearted 'pick up a bib and play'.

You will need to pay for these sessions on the night - £2 for just either hour, or £3 if you are staying for both hours.

This will take place on Mondays 23rd and 30th July, and 6th, 13th and 20th August.

Membership forms and affiliation

This year there are five different affiliation forms available, as the fees vary according to age. Please make sure you complete the right one! The required fee is at the bottom of the form.

The different categories are:

Please can members complete a form and return it to Trudie with the correct affiliation fee, or with a note confirming that you have transferred the correct fee electronically as soon as possible.

Players who will be taking part in either the Swindon League pre-season tournament on Saturday 1st September or the Regional League 2/3 tournament on Sunday 2nd September must be affiliated to take part.

SouthWest Invitational League

Devizes has been invited to join the new informal SouthWest Invitational League that is being set up this season.

The league will provide a link between local netball and the Southwest Regional Leagues 1 and 2, and is aimed to give more competition for clubs who are working towards regional standard.

Details will come out soon, but meanwhile, we are delighted! Our top squad will still participate in the Moonraker League but admission to this league should help us in our aim of qualifying for RL2 next season.

New Season Training Begins

Training for the new season begins on Monday 3rd September!

That night, we will have a 'getting to know you' and 'filling in all those forms I've forgotten to do so far' evening! At 7pm there will be tables with membership forms, info about paying by standing order, info about next year's fees, kit order forms, codes of conducts, training calendars, online payment forms - and all those other bits and pieces you know and love! So bring your cheque book or purse and a pen and take this opportunity to get all the paperwork done there and then!

After that, there will be a general warm up and then lots of time for game play - just the thing to get everyone ready for team 4-6 trials which take place on Monday 10th and Monday 17th September.

Membership Fees

This year's membership fees (including training fees and other costs) are as follows: £176 for players in teams 1 - 3 and £160 for players in teams 4 - Jax.

Membership fees should be paid by eight monthly standing orders (October - May), which works out at £22 a month for teams 1-3 and £20 a month for teams 4-Jax. If you are setting up the standing order online, the details are as follows: Devizes Netball Club, sort code 20-05-06, account number 50617377. Please use the player's name as the reference, followed by 'fees'. If you prefer, payment may be made in one or two installments; in exceptional cases, other arrangements can be made - please see the Stacey Squire, treasurer, or Becky Sedgwick, chairman.

Match fees are also changing this year in response to an increase in umpiring fees and court costs. This year they will be £3.50 a game, with a reduction to £2 for players playing half a game or less. For players accepting lifts to Swindon to play in the Swindon league on Saturdays we also ask for a donation of £2.50 to the driver of your car for the journey there and back.

In cases of financial hardship, fees may be reduced or waived; the club also accepts payment through the Free Time scheme, which is a scheme for families on a low income which can help pay for out of school activities. For more information, please contact Becky Sedgwick or Stacey Squire.

SDNL tournament winners!

A team from Devizes won the Swindon and District Netball League's pre-season tournament for divisions 4 and 5 on Saturday, beating 9 others and winning the final against Ramsbury.

Devizes were promoted as winners from division 5 last year, and is hoping for further success this season.

Devizes' under 16s performed brilliantly at Dorcan on Sunday to qualify for one of the two Wiltshire spots in the Southwest region under 16 league this season.

Having lost to Lawn first game, they easily beat Croft, meaning they had to beat last season's representatives, Pinehurst, in order to qualify - but took the match in their stride, beating Pinehurst comfortably 15-11.

The squad now take on some of the best club sides in the region over the next few months.

Congratulations to: Beth Baross, Emily Buller, Emily Hutchinson, Izzy Jaggs, Laura Holland, Lauren Wood, Louise Buller, Megan Taylor and Nicole Pfeil. Also in the squad are Mollie Green, Sarah Hogan and Katie Edwards.

First South West win for Devizes!

In the first round of the South West Invitational League, Devizes faced Weymouth team Arethusans NC.

Devizes got off to a flying start, leading 4-0 after just a few minutes but the visitors found their rhythm and were ahead by 1 at quarter time. Devizes refocussed at quarter time and succeeded in restricting Arethusan's influential GA. ,Nicole Pfeil at centre lead a strong attack, with plenty of movement in the circle, resulting in a half time lead for Devizes of four goals.

Hannah Sedgwick made a welcome return from uni, coming on at GS in the second half, and Devizes pulled away easily in the last two quarters, the final score being 52-35. After the first round, Devizes leads the league table.

Many thanks to our umpires, timers, scorers and supporters, and congratulations to Player of the Match, Louise Pfeil.

Super Sunday!

Devizes' juniors have had a fantastic weekend of netball. On Saturday, the local schools U12 netball tournament was won by the Devizes School team - all members of the club.

And then on Sunday, our U11 A team won the Pinehurst Charity High Five tournament in Swindon comfortably, beating some strong clubs on the way and winning the final 4-2 against Lawn. To cap off a great weekend, our U16 squad, representing Devizes School, easily won the county tournament, beating Lawn 10-5 in the final, and will go on to represent Wiltshire in the regional tournament in February.

Well done to everyone, and a big thanks to all our junior coaches, umpires and supporters.

Devizes edge closer to Abbeymeads

Devizes faced arch rivals Abbeymeads in the second round of the South West Invitational League last week - the two teams have met in the Wiltshire county playoff for the last two years, with the Swindon team taking the honours each time.

Devizes started the match slowly, conceding four goals in the first few minutes and a lacklustre first quarter ended in a nine goal deficit for the Moonraker champions. However, strong words at quarter time proved effective and a refocussed seven drew the second quarter. Changes at half time didn't disrupt Devizes' recovery,with outstanding performances from captain Becki Gaiger, Sophie Parsons and Lou Pfeil inspiring Devizes to win the second half of the game. The final score of 41-33 is the closest result to date against the Swindon champions, and Devizes' performance sets up an intriguing prospect for the return match in the New Year.

Rain 1, Netball 0!

This week's awful weather means that all of Tuesday and Thursday's matches were postponed. However, they have been rearranged and the new dates are now posted on the team pages in the fixtures lists. Please check and make sure you know when the new dates are!

Great first outing for our Under 16s

The regional under 16 squad had a successful first outing today, facing Hucclecote at home.

Hucclecote's juniors are very experienced, playing every year in the regional league at U14 and U16 level, and put out a strong squad with several of their players attending the regional talent and performance centres. They began the game very strongly and at half time were winning easily.

However, the second half was a different story. Emily Hutchinson moved out of defence to pair up with Emily Buller in the shooting circle while Katie Edwards, Devizes player of the match, went into goal defence to work with Louise Buller. The team stepped up, and Devizes won the second half by 13 goals to 6.

The squad's next match is against Team Jets on January 13th at home.

Our U16 regional squad faced tough opposition today when they travelled to Bournemouth to face Jersey's Team Jets in the latest round of the South West region under 16 league. Many of the Jets'squad were part of Jersey's very successful U14 squad last year, which represented the region at the national finals.

In this year's competition, Jets had already played and comfortably won their first three games. Devizes however were no respecters of reputation and played a highly competitive and skilful game. The final score of Team Jets 39, Devizes 30 is a very commendable score line and reflects the team's hard work this season.

The next round for the U16s is Sunday 20th January, home at Melksham Oaks against Randswick from Gloucestershire.

Moonraker Junior League, Sunday 3rd February

High Fives take place from 10am to noon, U12s from noon to 1pm, U13s and U14s from 11am to 12.30pm.

Information is now available for the junior Brean tour which takes place from Friday 5th July to Sunday 7th July.

The tour is open to girls in school years 8-11 and we will be entering an under 14 and an under 16 team. There is a maximum of twelve places per team.

Ball Girls at Team Bath

Juniors are invited to apply to be one of twelve ball girls at Team Bath's match against Loughborough Lightening on Friday 1st March, beginning at 7.45pm. The match will be at the university's sports training village.

If you would like to come along, please download the details here and return the slip to Becky asap as places are given out on a first come, first served basis.

It'll be a great evening and you'll be able to see some of the England stars in action, including the captain Pamela Cookey.

Accolade for ball girls

Twelve of our juniors were ball girls for Team Bath against Loughborough Lightening at Bath University on Friday.

The girls' work began well before the match when they were escorted to Bath's changing rooms where they collected the players' drinks bottles and towels and took them to the team bench by the court.

Jess Garland, Team Bath's coach, complemented our ball girls, commenting that they were alert and always ready to move to retrieve the ball. Well done Bethanie, Chelsey, Holly, Molly, Lottie, Darcey, Paris, Kate, Megan, Ella, Poppy and Rosie!

Superleague Phase 2

Following a great win away at Mavericks on Friday night, Team Bath are now at the top of the Netball Superleague heading into Phase 2.

Four teams will now contest for the Superleague title and the home matches will be on:

Monday 15th April v Surrey Storm (TV game)
Thursday 18th April v Mavericks
Monday 29th April v Celtic Dragons (TV game)

All games start at 8pm with doors opening at 7pm.

Summer netball - please read!

Summer Netball.

After the Moonraker League ends in May, there are opportunities to continue training and playing over the summer.

The club has entered three teams into the Moonraker Versatility Summer League, which runs from early June to mid-July. Teams must be a mixture of players from teams 1-5, with no more than 3 players from one team (if there are spaces, Jax players may be invited to join summer league teams). The club has also entered a team into the Swindon Regional Summer League which will be for players in squads 1 and 2. All players taking part in either summer league must take part in summer training.

Over the summer holidays, we will run ‘pay and play’ sessions where you just turn up on the evening and pay £3 a session.

Dates:

Summer training will be on Mondays between 7 and 9pm outside at the Leisure Centre and will be on June 3rd, 10th, 17th and 24th; July 1st , 8th , 15th and 22nd July.

Pay and Play sessions will be on Mondays 29th July, 5th, 12th, 19th August.

Trials for all teams will be on Sunday 14th July.

Normal training will resume on Monday 2nd September.

Costs:

For players wishing to train in June and July the cost will be £20. This must either be transferred online or paid by cheque or cash. No player will be accepted for a summer league team until they have paid the fees.

If you want to be put into a Moonraker summer league team, please let Trudie know by Monday 13th May. You also need to transfer the £20 online (ensuring you put summer league and your name as the reference) or hand in a cheque or cash as soon as you can.

Trials form now available!

Trials for teams 1 to 4 and the regional squad will take place on Sunday 14th July between 10am and 2pm at the Leisure Centre. Trials forms are available here.

This will be the only trials date, and all players should attend if possible. If you can't attend, please let Nikki know as soon as possible and you will be placed in a team based on previous performance and commitment.

Jax who wish to trial for team 4 or above should attend on this date, but under 14s NOT currently playing for Jax should attend the first training session on Monday 2nd September, when you will be assessed for either Jax 1 or Jax 2.
